The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Lagos Territorial Office (LTO) and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) swiftly contained a massive fire at a chemical warehouse along the Badagry Expressway on Saturday evening, preventing a potential catastrophe.
The blaze erupted around 7:00 p.m. on January 24, 2026, at a facility beside SAPID, where stored chemicals ignited dramatically.
According to NEMA’s official statement released Sunday, “The incident, which originated within a warehouse storing various chemical substances, spread rapidly to adjoining buildings housing bathroom fittings and doors.”
NEMA LTO mobilized immediately after the distress call, partnering with LSFRS and other emergency teams. Preliminary reports point to a container explosion as the trigger: “The explosion resulted in the swift spread of flames to the roof of a nearby warehouse, with highly flammable materials further escalating the intensity of the fire.”
By Sunday, responders had the fire under control, though crews continued dousing hotspots to avoid re-ignition.
Damage was extensive, with “severe structural damage particularly to the factory premises and the roof of the affected warehouse,” and losses running into millions of naira.
NEMA therefore confirmed that no lives were lost, and no serious injuries were reported.
Investigations continue into the explosion’s cause.
NEMA assured, “Further updates, including a comprehensive damage assessment and confirmed cause of the fire, will be communicated as more information becomes available.”
