The Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 38.
In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Neuer expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his career, highlighting the 2014 World Cup win as a career-defining moment. His retirement is effective immediately, leaving Germany without his services for upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Hungary and the Netherlands in September.
He wrote, “After over 15 years and 124 national games, my career in the German national football team ends today. Anyone who knows me knows that I didn’t make this decision lightly. I feel very good physically and of course, the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico would have been irritating too.
“And yet, after many intense and long discussions with my family and friends, I have decided that right now is the right time to close my chapter in the National Eleven.
“Looking back today, I am filled with pride and gratitude! Not least because we met on 13th July 2014 we were able to fulfil our big dream and together became world champions in Brazil. For a total of 7 years and 61 games, I was allowed – up to my injury – to lead the German national team as captain on the field.
“An honour that I appreciated anew every time. This year’s home European Championship was another highlight, even if it unfortunately wasn’t enough for the title. Because in every second I felt a very special euphoria and cohesion all over the country. Let’s keep that in mind! Many thanks to all the staff, supervisors, coaches and also fellow players who have supported me since my debut in the national team on 02. Joined June 2009! And I especially want to thank you, dear fans, for supporting me all these years!”
However, his outstanding career includes a pivotal role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup victory, where he was awarded the Golden Glove as the tournament’s best goalkeeper. Neuer captained the team from 2016 to 2023, leading them through multiple major tournaments, including the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Dailyeconomy on July 15, reported that the Argentina forward, Angel Di María has announced his retirement from the Argentina national team after a 16-year career.
