The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has voiced its concerns regarding a viral video on social media that shows protests in Ghana, where some Ghanaians are demanding the repatriation of Nigerians.

In the footage, they claim that the behaviour of Nigerians does not align with Ghanaian values.

Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, issued a statement in which the commission’s Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, strongly criticised the “blanket outrage” directed at Nigerians living in Ghana and the generalisation of all Nigerians as criminals.

Dabiri-Erewa stated, “Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves while those bad ones should be fished out to face necessary sanctions.

“Ghana and Nigeria are like siamese twins. They are brothers and in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration should continue to live in peace like brothers.”

The NIDCOM boss appealed for calm and urged Nigerians living in Ghana to refrain from provocation or violence.

She assured that the matter is being handled at the diplomatic level by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zubairu Dada.

Dabiri-Erewa also cautioned against the use of inciteful words from either side, warning that such statements could escalate the situation.

Furthermore, she advised Nigerians to disregard circulating videos claiming the destruction of Nigerian shops and properties by Ghanaians, stating, “There is no evidence to that, and we must at all cost try to prevent any reprisal attacks.”
