Niger Petrol Tanker Explosion: NEMA confirms 61 persons’ death, 43 cattle burnt

The National Emergency Management Agency has confirmed the death of 61 individuals and 43 cattle in the petrol tanker explosion that occurred on Sunday, September 8, in Ekpan Manworo’ along Lapai-Agaie, 2km from Dendo Community in Agaie Local Government of the State.

The catastrophe incident occurred when a petrol tanker loaded with

petrol collided with a trailer truck loaded with travellers and cattle from Wudil in Kano State heading to Lagos.

The incident resulted in two other vehicles, a crane truck and a pickup van also caught up in the incident.

NEMA in a circular on Tuesday, stated that some individuals were burnt beyond recognition, asserting that eight persons are currently receiving treatment and 43 cattle were also burnt beyond usefulness.

The statement reads, “NEMA Minna Operations Office received a report of a deadly tanker explosion that occurred on Sunday, the 8th of September, 2024, at about 12.30 am at ‘Ekpan Manworo’ along Lapai-Agaie, 2km from Dendo Community in Agaie LGA.

“As on Monday 9th September, 61 persons had been confirmed dead, some burnt beyond recognition while 8 persons are currently receiving treatment. 43 cattle were also burnt.

NEMA MOO SAROs, FRSC, NSEMA’s (RRT) and LGEMCs, jointly carried out the Search & Rescue operation at the scene of the incident. NEMA MOO & other stakeholders are still monitoring the situation.”
