Nigeria condoles U.S. over plane, helicopter collision
In a heartfelt statement, President Bola Tinubu has on behalf of Nigeria expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident that occurred near Washington, D.C., where a mid-air collision between an Army helicopter and a commercial passenger jet resulted in significant loss of life.
The incident, which took place on Wednesday night, involved American Airlines Flight 5342, carrying 64 individuals, and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter.
The Nigerian government extended its condolences to the families of the victims and the American people, commending first responders for their courageous efforts in the face of adversity.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident in Washington, D.C.
“On behalf of Nigeria, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the people of the United States, and all affected by this profound loss. I commend the courageous efforts of first responders and emergency teams for their selfless work in harsh conditions.
“Nigeria stands in solidarity with the United States Government and its People, united in grief and hopeful for a new day,” Tinubu had written via his X (formally Twitter) account on Thursday.
As search and rescue operations continue in the icy waters of the Potomac River, authorities have confirmed fatalities but have yet to recover any survivors from the crash site at the time of filling this report.
