Nigeria and the European Union are gearing up for a high-stakes ministerial summit in Abuja this March, marking a bold step to supercharge their strategic partnership amid global economic shifts.

The pact emerged from talks between Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot.

Ministry spokesperson Kimibie Ebienfa confirmed the details in an official statement, highlighting a shift from oil dependency toward vibrant non-oil sectors like agriculture, digital innovation, and green tech.

This move aims to diversify Nigeria’s economy and foster sustainable growth.

The EU pledged ongoing support for counter-terrorism efforts, Gulf of Guinea maritime security, and tackling youth unemployment—the root of regional instability.

Nigeria, in turn, urged more EU backing for climate adaptation and green tech access.

On migration, both sides endorsed skills-based partnerships, tying into the EU’s Global Gateway strategy to fund Nigerian infrastructure, clean energy, and youth programs.

Leaders hailed 2026 as a “pivotal year” for mutual gains, with the summit set to cement long-term ties.
