Nigeria mourns Air India flight tragedy, extends condolences to India, other nations

President Bola Tinubu has on Friday expressed deep sorrow over the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of over 240 people.
In a statement conveyed shared on X (formerly Twitter), Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government, and the people of India.
He wrote, “The tragedy of Air India reminds us, once again, of the fragility of life and the common bond of humanity that holds us together.”
He added, “At this moment of sorrow and pain, Nigeria stands in solidarity with our friend, brother and partner, Narendra Modi, and the people of India. Nigeria also deeply sympathises with the families and friends of other victims on board the aircraft.”
The ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was en route to London and carried 242 people, including 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, one Canadian, two pilots, and 10 cabin crew, Dailyeconomy reports.
The crash has stunned many, with Prime Minister Modi describing the incident as one that has “stunned and saddened everyone.”
Tinubu also commiserated with the leaders and people of Great Britain, Portugal, and Canada over the loss of their nationals.
He lauded the swift response of Indian emergency agencies and expressed confidence in their professionalism and compassion to handle the crisis effectively.
He concluded with a prayer, “May the Almighty receive the souls of the departed and comfort their families.”
