The Armed Forces of Nigeria have announced the arrest of sixteen officers during a recent routine military exercise due to issues of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.

In an official statement on Sunday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, said, “Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues.”

Some of the officers detained were already under jurisdiction for various offences and were either awaiting or undergoing trial.

Their conduct was described as “deemed incompatible with the standards of military service.”

Gusau further underscored, “Upon completion of investigation indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces.”

This move forms part of ongoing efforts to uphold discipline, order, and loyalty within military ranks.

The statement reassured the public that these actions are “strictly disciplinary in nature and part of routine efforts to maintain order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks.”

The Armed Forces affirmed their zero tolerance for behaviour that “undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority.”

Reiterating their commitment, the Armed Forces declared they “remain fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will remain professional at all times.”
