Nigerian insurers to host 250 delegates at 2025 WAICA conference on climate change

The Nigerian Insurance Industry is set to welcome no fewer than 250 delegates from across West Africa and beyond to the 2025 West Africa Insurance Companies Association (WAICA) Education Conference.
The event will run from October 12 to 15 at the Grand Ballroom of Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Speaking at the press conference that was held today, Tuesday at Insurers House NIA, Victoria Island, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Ebelechuwu Nwachukwu, highlighted the significance of the conference with the theme “The West African Insurer in the Face of Climate Change” noting that it “reflects the urgent need to address climate-related risks unique to Africa.”
The conference will feature insurance practitioners, regulators, policymakers, and thought leaders from WAICA member countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. It aims to promote knowledge exchange, networking, and regional cooperation.
Nwachukwu emphasised the critical challenges climate change poses to the insurance industry stating, “Climate is impacting agriculture, construction, roads, infrastructure, and even education. Floods and extreme weather destroy livelihoods and disrupt economies.
“This conference will dissect these emerging risks and encourage the development of innovative insurance products tailored to these challenges.”
Keynote speakers include; Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister of State, Ministry of Finance, and Olusegun Omosehin, Commissioner for Insurance, NAICOM, serving as Chief Host.
The program also includes panel sessions chaired by notable industry leaders and social events sponsored by Africa Reinsurance Corporation and WAICA Reinsurance Corporation.
The Managing Director of Anchor Insurance Company and the conference Publicity Secretary, Austin Ebose Osegha, reassured participants on security.
“All security measures, including coordination with the NCDC, have been put in place to ensure the safety of delegates throughout the event,” he assured confidently.
Davis Ebelechukwu Iyasere, WAICA Secretary-General, spoke on partnerships, underlining the importance of collaborative capacity building.
“We work closely with our members and the African Insurance Organisation to enhance insurance education and publicize relevant programs across the sub-region,” said Iyasere.
The LOC for the 2025 WAICA Education Conference has assembled an array of eminent local and international insurance industry leaders, dignitaries, and technical experts who will speak on and critically dissect the theme and various sub-themes of the conference. These include:
