In a development that may impact Nigerian travellers, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority’s Director for Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, has disclosed that passengers with long layovers in Turkey may be eligible for complimentary accommodation.

Achimugu in a terse statement via his X (formally Twitter) account on Sunday noted that to access the accommodation, travellers must possess a Turkish visa obtained from the consulate in Nigeria.

He wrote, “A Nigerian passenger travelling through Turkey with a long layover may be entitled to accommodation. However, to be able to access that accommodation, you MUST have a Turkish visa from the consulate in Nigeria.

“Without that visa, you cannot enter Istanbul.”

It had earlier been reported that Turkish authorities have clarified that without a valid Turkish visa, Nigerian passengers will not be permitted to enter Istanbul, even if they have a layover. This stipulation applies regardless of the length of the layover or the traveller’s destination.
