The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a major upgrade in passport production, promising to deliver passports to Nigerians within one week for the first time in 62 years, thanks to the centralisation of passport production.

Minister of Interior Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during an inspection of the new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, said, “The project is 100 per cent ready. Nigeria can now be more productive and efficient in delivering passport services.”

He highlighted the leap in production capacity, revealing that “old machines could only produce 250 to 300 passports daily, but the new system had a capacity of 4,500 to 5,000 passports every day.”

This upgrade means the NIS “can now meet daily demands within just four to five hours of operation,” a development the minister called “a game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria.”

Tunji-Ojo underscored the commitment to faster service delivery, “We promised two-week delivery, and we’re now pushing for one week. Automation and optimisation are crucial for keeping this promise to Nigerians.”

The centralisation effort, he noted, aligns with global standards and will “improve uniformity and enhance the overall integrity of Nigerian travel documents worldwide.”

Additionally, it supports President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda by boosting NIS’s operational capacity and transforming the narrative for better service delivery across the country.
