NNPC honours D’Tigress after historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket title

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) warmly welcomed the victorious D’Tigress, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, following their stunning triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

The team defeated Mali 78-64 in the final held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, securing their fifth consecutive continental title and their seventh overall.

The welcoming ceremony was led by Musa Ahmadu Kida, Chairman of the NNPCL, Board and President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).

In his remarks, Kida praised the team’s “resilience and consistency,” highlighting how the D’Tigress have “made history by not only winning the Championship five consecutive times but also remaining unbeaten on the Continent in the last decade.”

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Bashir Ojulari, also lauded the team and the National Sports Commission for their exceptional performance, affirming the company’s commitment to supporting sports development in Nigeria.

Staff from NNPC Ltd. gathered to show their respect and share in the team’s monumental success.

Coach Rene Wakama and team captain Amy Okonkwo expressed deep gratitude to the NNPC Board, Management, and staff for their warm reception and ongoing support.

“NNPC Ltd. staff members in the Towers came out to pay respect and share in the team’s success. The team’s coach, Rene Wakama and captain, Amy Okonkwo, also took time to thank the NNPC Ltd. Board, Management and staff for the warm reception,” NNPCL says in a statement on Wednesday.
