The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a firm directive prohibiting pilots from departing if disruptive passengers remain on board, reinforcing the commitment to safety and respect within the aviation sector.
Speaking at a meeting with domestic airlines in Abuja, Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, emphasised, “Pilots are not to depart until disruptive passengers are removed from the aircraft or the matter is settled amicably.”
He added, “This measure will help protect cabin crew and encourage passengers to treat them respectfully.”
Achimugu further condemned assaults against cabin crew, noting, “Passengers have no right to assault cabin crew. Many incidents escalate because pilots do not assert their authority early enough.”
He also called on cabin crew to maintain professionalism, stating, “Crew members must avoid being rude, and passengers should not mistake their firmness for discourtesy.”
In attendance, Ifueko Abdulmalik, Senior Special Assistant to the Director-General, warned airlines of penalties tied to inadequate passenger care during flight disruptions.
Key discussions included enforcement of mobile phone rules, refund and compensation processes, and measures to protect cabin staff.
