The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to join the global movement to break the silence, myths, and stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease, as the world marked World Alzheimer’s Day on Sunday.

In a statement shared on its official X handle, the agency explained that Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory, thinking, and behaviour.

It noted that the disease, which is the leading cause of dementia, is not a curse, witchcraft, or spiritual attack but a medical condition requiring care and medical support.

The NOA outlined warning signs to look out for, including frequent forgetfulness, disrupting daily routines, getting lost in familiar places, repeating the same questions or stories, difficulty with speech or decision-making, and withdrawal from social activities. It urged early medical consultation for better treatment and quality of life.

On prevention, the agency advised Nigerians to adopt healthier lifestyles, such as regular physical activity, controlling blood pressure and diabetes, eating balanced diets, staying socially connected, and keeping the mind active through reading and learning new skills.

The NOA stressed that people living with dementia should never be mocked, feared, or abandoned, but instead deserve dignity, respect, and quality care.

“Together, we can create a Nigeria where people with dementia feel supported, safe, and valued,” the agency declared.
