The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, has apprehended five suspected vandals accused of stealing transformer and streetlight cables in Ilorin’s Tanke area.

The suspects — Samson Akintola (21), Muhammed Zakariya (19), Mohammed Monsur (20), Ibrahim Hamida (19), and Kabir Abubakar (24) — were caught during a joint operation involving NSCDC operatives and the Tanke Community Vigilante Group at about 1 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2025.

The Corps’ Public Relations Officer, ASC 1 Ayoola Shola, stated in a statement on Thursday that the suspects were found with “vandalised transformer cables, streetlight cables, and burnt copper wires,” believed stolen from the Asa Dam and Sapati areas.

He added, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had been involved in willful vandalisation and theft of public electrical installations, an offence contrary to Section 1(9) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

The suspects remain in custody and will face court charges once investigations conclude, while efforts continue to capture other accomplices connected to the crime.
