The National Youth Service Corps has dismissed reports of a corps member dying from a thunder strike in Orientation Camp, Umunna, Abia State.
This was disclosed in a statement shared on X (formally Twitter) of NYSC on Sunday.
The statement stated that the scheme had not recorded any such incident and urged the public to disregard the false information.
The statement read, “The Management of National Youth Service Corps wishes to inform the general public that the thunder strike incident that occurred in Abia State Orientation Camp, Umunna, yesterday (July 13, 2024) did not record any death as being reported in some sections of the media. Though there was a heavy downpour in the early hours of the day with an unusual thunderstorm, the only injured female Corps Member was immediately stabilised by the dedicated Orientation Camp Medical Team from Federal Medical Centre Umuahia.
“The Corps Member was immediately referred to a hospital in Umuahia for prompt medical evaluation. The Corps Member is very stable and responding to treatment accordingly, whereas, the parents of the Corps Member have been contacted and they have confirmed that their daughter is in a very stable condition.
“The blogger that erupted the information did not get the facts of the matter from NYSC before publishing. NYSC as a proactive organisation is committed to the health, well-being and security of its Corps Members at all times.”
