Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has hailed Tunde Onakoya’s historic achievement after the Nigerian chess master set a new Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, playing alongside Shawn Martinez in Times Square, New York City, from April 17 to 20, 2025.

Abiodun in a statement shared on his X (formally Twitter) handle wrote, “Congratulations to @Tunde_OD on setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon… This remarkable feat is not just about endurance and strategy, it is a symbol of dedication, vision, and the limitless power of the human spirit.”

Onakoya, a proud son of Ogun State, is celebrated not only for his personal triumph but also for his transformative work through Chess in Slums Africa.

The initiative uses chess as a tool to empower children from disadvantaged backgrounds, offering them hope, confidence, and access to new opportunities.

“He has turned chess into more than just a game; he’s made it a lifeline. Through his tireless efforts, children from disadvantaged communities have found hope, confidence, and a world of new opportunities.

“He has taken kids from the slums and put them on global stages, showing that talent knows no boundaries and dreams can begin anywhere,” Abiodun stated.

Onakoya’s journey from growing up in a Lagos slum to global recognition is a testament to the impact of purpose-driven action.

His Chess in Slums Africa initiative has provided scholarships, mentorship, and critical thinking skills to over a thousand children, breaking barriers and challenging the poverty trap.

“Tunde’s journey is an inspiration to millions. His work uplifts our youth, shines a spotlight on the potential in our communities, and reminds us all of the power of purpose-driven action.

“This @GWR is more than a personal triumph, it is a victory for every child who now believes that greatness is within reach,” the governor concluded.

On Sunday, April 20, Dailyeconomy reported that Onakoya broke the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon by completing a remarkable 64-hour session in New York City’s Times Square, marking his second attempt at the record, having briefly held it in April 2024 before being overtaken by the Norwegians.
