Ogun I customs command cracks down on smugglers with N1.4bn seizures

The Ogun I Customs Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reinforced its zero-tolerance policy on smuggling, announcing seizures of illicit goods valued at ₦1.4 billion in just one month.
Speaking to journalists, Comptroller Godwin Otunla reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economy and security.
He stated, “Today, I stand here to make a firm commitment that the Command under my leadership will not succumb to the antics of recalcitrant economic saboteurs working against our nation’s economy and security.”
The recent interceptions include:
• 4,424 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice
• 50 sacks and 1,936 parcels of cannabis sativa (coconut-sized)
• 105 used pneumatic tyres
• 21 bales and 3 sacks of second-hand clothing
• 3 foreign used vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce valued at ₦1 billion
• 6,400 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)
Comptroller Otunla also highlighted a significant boost in revenue collection, revealing that the Command amassed ₦45,054,191 in July 2025, a 27.47% increase compared to ₦35,327,852 in July 2024. He credited this improvement to “stricter compliance, improved border operations, and stronger stakeholder engagement.”
The seized cannabis was formally handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Idiroko Special Area Commander, Ekundayo Williams, praised the collaborative efforts, saying, “The synergy we share against drug trafficking is robust, and I have no doubt that what we have done today will positively impact our economy and the lives of our future leaders.”
The event closed with Comptroller Otunla showcasing the confiscated items and educating the public on the risks posed by smuggling activities, reinforcing the Command’s resolve to protect the nation’s interests.
