The Senator representing the Edo North senatorial district and former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole has attacked the First Lady of the state, Betsy Obaseki, over her statement that only the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, has a wife among the candidates jostling for the state governor seat in the forthcoming Edo election.

During the PDP’s campaign flag-off at the Ubiaja Township Stadium in Esan South-East Local Government Area, Obaseki’s wife introduced Ighodalo’s wife, Ifeyinwa, to the crowd, stating the importance of having a woman in the Government House.

She could be heard saying in a snippet video, “Let us vote for the best candidate in this coming election, and I want to introduce the wife. Incidentally, among all the candidates, only one has a wife, and it’s our own party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo. Only he has a wife. This is the wife, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo.

“Edo women, know that only one candidate has a wife. Better things come to women when there’s a woman in the Government House. All women in Edo, regardless of party, should see the candidate who has a wife. They will take us higher.”

Reacting to the statement, Oshiomhole in an interview with TVC knocked the First Lady’s statement, stating that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Monday Okpebholo has children and he invested in their education and still has a cordial relationship with the mother of the children adding that their mother joined them in recent campaigns.

He said, “I was shocked yesterday to see the First Lady saying that our candidate has no wife, because here is a woman who has no child; she and her husband have no child and are not ready to adopt.

“Although I don’t blame anyone for not having a child, people who have a love for children go to motherless and adopt children, they have not adopted any child and they are both in their 60s.

“Our candidate not only has children; he has invested in the education of those children. Such that you watched them on live Television covered by the media stations. The first one that spoke is a lawyer, the second one is a medical doctor, and they addressed the crowd in Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North and their mother was there.”

The Edo governorship election is scheduled to be held on September 21, 2024.
