Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has requested pardon for a young man who was sentenced to death by hanging for allegedly stealing a fowl and eggs in 2010.

Adeleke in a statement by his Spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, ordered the state’s attorney general and commissioner for justice to commence a full investigation into the case and initiate processes to grant the young man a prerogative of mercy.

Adeleke said, “I have read about the case. I recognize separation of powers in our democracy. In this particular case, I have directed the Commissioner for Justice to initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man.

“Osun is a land of justice and equity. We must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives.

“I assure the public that the matter is receiving my direct attention. A sense of urgency is also attached to our response to the matter as a responsible state government.”

The case has garnered significant attention, involving a young man who was arrested in 2010 and sentenced to death by hanging in 2014 for stealing a fowl.

The harshness of the punishment for such a seemingly minor crime has sparked widespread debate and raised concerns about the proportionality of the sentence.
