The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has on Friday announced that the state will officially launch its Sub-National African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation Strategy on 12 September in Ibadan.
This initiative marks Oyo State as the first subnational government in both Nigeria and Africa to develop and roll out such a strategy.
The governor in a letter shared with our correspondent on Friday described the move as “a historic step for us as a State — we are the first subnational government in Nigeria, and indeed Africa, to develop and roll out a strategy of this kind.”
He emphasised that “it is a bold move that positions our farmers, manufacturers, and traders to take full advantage of the AfCFTA agreement and connect their goods and services with markets across Africa.”
Highlighting the collaborative effort behind the strategy, he credited months of “hard work, consultation, and collaboration with our partners,” particularly noting the role of Ms Neo Theodore Thaselo, his Special Adviser on International Trade and the AfCFTA.
“This is truly another pacesetter moment for Oyo State,” he said.
In addition to trade initiatives, significant progress has been made at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport.
The governor revealed that “the upgraded runway is now complete, bringing us closer to reopening the airport,” with local flights expected to resume soon, just in time for the Olubadan coronation ceremony.
Speaking about the upcoming cultural event, the governor shared, “The coronation of my father, His Royal Majesty, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, will hold on 26 September 2025. I am looking forward to carrying out this assignment and honouring him in this way.”
Closing on an optimistic note, he reaffirmed his commitment to the state’s future stressing, “Great things are indeed happening in Oyo State and contrary to doomsayers’ predictions, we still have another 20 months of sustainable development to deliver to the people of Oyo State.”
He thereby thanked citizens for their ongoing support, stating, “Thank you, as always, for your support and for believing in the future we are building together.”
