Former Presidential candidate, Peter Obi expressed deep concern over the recent United States government designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), highlighting the urgent security crisis faced by the nation.
In a statement released Monday, he warned that “possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern.”
Obi acknowledged the severity of the insecurity gripping Nigeria, citing Amnesty International’s report that “over 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023.”
He strongly condemned the “unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians” and emphasised the need for immediate efforts to halt the bloodshed.
According to Obi, “the terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance.”
He criticised the current APC-led government, lamenting its “lack and absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion” necessary to govern effectively and ensure peace, truth, and justice in Nigeria.
On the diplomatic front, Obi called for strengthened collaboration between Nigeria and the US, stating, “That relationship should not falter.”
He urged “constructive diplomatic and any other plausible engagement by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns” so both countries can work “in concert and expeditiously towards that purpose.”
