Capital Express Group and descendants of Madam Ukpenbo Aduke Odigie fondly known as Iya Pupa, have commemorated the 50-year remembrance of their matriarch, with a grand event in Lagos on Monday, that highlighted not only her life but the enduring legacy reflected in her extensive family lineage.

The memorial gathering brought together generations of descendants, friends, and prominent members of society, celebrating a woman whose values of compassion, discipline, and faith continue to shape lives decades after her passing in 1976.

A central feature of the event was the presentation of her detailed family tree, illustrating the breadth of her descendants and the strong generational structure she established. The lineage, spanning children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family branches, underscored the far-reaching impact of her life and the values she instilled.

Born on October 10, 1900, in Igueben, Edo State, with roots in Ora, Mama Odigie’s early years were shaped by hardship. She was betrothed as a child in settlement of her late father’s debt before later marrying trader Mr Ajakaiye.

Despite enduring personal challenges, including a prolonged and difficult pregnancy resolved through traditional means, she emerged as a resilient and nurturing figure whose home became a place of refuge and generosity.

Family members described her as a woman of rare kindness and strength. According to relatives, her home was always open, with food readily available for anyone in need.

Chairman of Capital Express Group, Chief Anthony Aletor, CON, mni, her grandson, paid tribute to her enduring influence, noting that her teachings continue to guide his personal and professional life.

“My grandmother was a woman with a golden heart. She taught me never to compromise standards and instilled in me the fear of God,” he said. “She believed strongly that no one should show wickedness to others because everyone has a protective God.”

Reflecting on her legacy 50 years after her passing, Aletor expressed deep gratitude.

“Even after five decades, her memory remains strong. We celebrate her life, her values, and the foundation she laid for generations to come,” he added.
The event also showcased the success and unity of her descendants, many of whom have excelled in various fields, reinforcing the enduring relevance of her teachings.

Guests described the occasion as both a solemn remembrance and a vibrant celebration of a life that continues to inspire, with her family tree standing as a testament to a legacy built on resilience, love, and unwavering values.
