Police appoints Okon Placid as new Force PRO, Giwa as Force New Media Officer

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the appointment of DCP Anthony Okon Placid as the new Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), according to a statement from Ag. ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the outgoing FPRO.
In his statement released on Sunday, Hundeyin also announced that the IGP has approved CSP Ali Giwa as the new Force New Media Officer.
DCP Placid, a seasoned officer born on December 2, 1970, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, brings extensive experience in administration, operations, intelligence, training, and international peacekeeping.
He hails from Mbiokporo Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area and holds a BSc in Geography and Regional Planning from the University of Uyo, an MA in Law and Diplomacy from the University of Jos, and pursued an LLB at the National Open University of Nigeria.
Commissioned into the Nigeria Police Force in August 1998 after training as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police at the Police Academy in Kano, Placid has served in key roles such as Police Public Relations Officer in Adamawa State and at the Police Staff College in Jos; Chief of Training for the African Union Mission in Sudan; Head of Training and Development for the United Nations Mission in Darfur; and Divisional Police Officer in several locations including Federal Housing Calabar, Bakassi, Uruan, and Gembu.
His international expertise includes certifications in Police Studies, Military Studies, Gender Awareness, International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights, and Civilian Protection from United Nations Peace Operations Specialised Training (POST), as well as a UNITAR Senior Leadership and Peacebuilding course in Kenya.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), a Commonwealth Human Rights Trainer, and an ICRC Trainer on International Humanitarian Law.
Placid is also a graduate of Senior Executive Course 47 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), inducted as a Member of the National Institute (mni) on December 13, 2025.
