Police have no right to check civilian phones — Delta PPRO

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, has stated that police officers do not have the authority to search civilians’ phones.
This clarification follows increasing concerns about police conduct regarding the privacy rights of residents in Delta State.
Edafe in a post shared on X (formally Twitter) on Saturday established that the phone is private property.
He wrote, “No Policeman in Delta can ever tell me they search a person’s phone. It is your private property.
“They can’t do you anything, just don’t allow them to search your phone.”
Reacting to the post, the official X handle of the Delta State Police Command commented “If they insist, that’s where @Delta_PoliceCRU comes in.”
