Police kill two kidnap suspects, rescue four in gun battle

The operatives of the Imo Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit have killed two suspected kidnappers and rescued four victims after a hefty gun battle.
The incident occurred on Saturday, January 4, in Umuokanne, Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of the State.
According to the Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Okoye Henry, the operation began when a distress call was received around 12:00 pm reporting the abduction of three women and one man.
Acting swiftly, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit located the criminals’ hideout, leading to a gunfight between the police and the kidnappers.
The four rescued victims, include Carolyn Didia (42), Ego Odu (48), Apollonia Ezekwe (40) and Godwin Ezekwe (37).
Two of the victims sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation and are receiving treatment at Oforola Health Centre.
The police also recovered one AK-47 rifle, 21 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and a magazine from the criminals. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend any remaining members of the criminal syndicate.
Henry confirmed that two suspects were neutralised while four victims were rescued.
“The victims are now safe, unfortunately two of the victims who sustained gunshot injuries during the operation are receiving treatment at Oforola Health Centre,” he said.
He assured the public of the police’s commitment to safeguarding residents.
“We urge the public to report any suspicious activities to support our efforts in enhancing community safety,” he added.
