Police probe alleged officer’s assault on civilian

The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation following the circulation of a viral video on social media showing police officers allegedly assaulting a civilian.

The disturbing footage, which surfaced on social media, reportedly captured the incident along Lagos Street in Umuahia on February 20, sparking widespread public outcry.

Reacting to the controversial incident, the Abia State Police Command in a statement on Friday, by its spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirming that the officers involved have been identified, noting that the officers are currently under interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Umuahia.

The statement reads, “The Abia State Police Command is aware of a trending video on Facebook depicting some police officers manhandling a civilian. The incident is alleged to have occurred along Lagos Street, Umuahia on 20/02/2025.

“The officers involved have been identified, and are currently under interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

“The public will be updated after necessary administrative actions are taken against the erring officers.

“The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, strongly condemns this act of unprofessional misconduct and incivility toward members of the public. He reiterates that under his leadership, the command is committed to ensuring a professionally competent, Rule of law complaint, and people-friendly police force in line with the vision of the Inspector General of Police.

“The public is hereby advised to report any misconduct, unprofessional behavior, or incivility by officers of the command to the Complaint Response Unit via 09031593827, 09035401645.”
