The Lagos State Police Command has reacted to a viral video showing a large group of young men reportedly arriving in Lagos and assembling outside a company in the Ibeju-Lekki area.
In a statement issued on Friday, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, noted that police officers were deployed to the location on May 14 following public concern over the video.
Hundeyin claimed preliminary investigations revealed that the 89 young men, all from Katsina State, had been recruited to work as labourers at the Dangote Refinery in Lekki.
He said a contractor associated with the refinery appeared at the police station and confirmed that he had personally sourced the workers from Katsina for legitimate employment purposes.
His statement was corroborated by the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the refinery, who affirmed that the men had been properly verified and cleared to enter and reside within the facility.
The police spokesperson added that all individuals were thoroughly searched, with no incriminating items found in their possession. Each person presented valid identification, including National Identification Numbers (NINs), which were verified by the authorities.
“The individuals were thoroughly searched, and no incriminating items were found in their possession.
“Furthermore, each person properly identified themselves and presented their National Identification Numbers (NINs), which were duly verified,” Hundeyin said partly in the statement.
Hundeyin thereby called on members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information capable of inciting panic or tension.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urges residents to remain calm. The Command remains committed to ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order across the state,” the statement added.
