Real Madrid have officially signed England international Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool on a six-year contract until 2031, paying a €10 million transfer fee to secure his early release before the FIFA Club World Cup.
Alexander-Arnold, 26, leaves Liverpool after a decorated career with 352 appearances and nine major trophies including the 2019 Champions League and Premier League titles in 2020 and 2025.
He expressed the need for a “new challenge” as motivation for the move.
The right-back will reunite with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, now Real Madrid’s head coach, and is expected to debut against Al Hilal in the Club World Cup starting June 18.
Real Madrid’s sporting director highlighted Alexander-Arnold’s exceptional passing and attacking threat, crucial for a team that struggled at right-back this season due to injuries to Dani Carvajal and positional shifts for Lucas Vazquez.
Liverpool expressed gratitude for his contributions, “Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool FC with the club appreciative and grateful for his contribution to those successes,” the club stated.
Alexander-Arnold commented, “I am excited to join Real Madrid and take on this new challenge. I look forward to contributing to the team’s success and playing in the Club World Cup”.
This signing ranks Alexander-Arnold as the fourth most valuable player ever signed by Real Madrid, behind only Jude Bellingham, Eden Hazard, and Kylian Mbappé, with a market valuation of €75 million.
