Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has publicly apologised for his actions during Saturday’s dramatic Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona, where he was sent off for throwing an ice pack at the referee in the closing moments of extra time.

The German international, who had to be restrained by teammates and staff, admitted on social media on Sunday saying, “There’s definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I’m very sorry for that. We played a very good game from the second half on.

“After 111 minutes, I was not able to help my team anymore and before the final whistle I did a mistake.

“Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I have disappointed last night.”

Rüdiger’s dismissal came amid chaotic scenes that also saw teammates Jude Bellingham and Lucas Vázquez sent off at the final whistle.

The incident is expected to result in a multi-game suspension for Rüdiger, who expressed regret for letting down his team and supporters on a night when tempers flared at La Cartuja stadium in Seville.
