After a thorough screening at its plenary, the Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
A distinguished professor of law and senior advocate of Nigeria, Amupitan succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who led the electoral body for a decade.
Hailing from Kogi in the North Central region, Amupitan currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos.
During his presentation to the Senate, he pledged to modernise Nigeria’s electoral process by deploying drones and collaborating with agencies such as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
