In a significant blow to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of key political maneuvers, six members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), bolstering the party’s ranks in the northwest state.

The defections, announced Thursday, December 25, 2025, involve prominent lawmakers representing diverse constituencies across Zamfara.

This move comes amid ongoing political realignments in the state, where APC has sought to consolidate its influence following recent electoral battles.

The defecting lawmakers are:
• Hon. Muktar Nasir Kaura (Kaura North Constituency)
• Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi Maru (Maru North Constituency)
• Hon. Amiru Ahmad Keta (Tsafe West Constituency)
• Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi (Gummi 1 Constituency)
• Barr. Bashir Abubakar Masama (Bukkuyum North Constituency)
• Hon. Bashir Bello (Bungudu West Constituency)

This is view as a strategic gain for APC, potentially tipping the balance in the 30-member assembly where party loyalties have fluctuated.

Zamfara, a hotbed of banditry and political intrigue, has seen similar crossovers in recent years, often tied to governance alliances and security concerns.

While official statements from the defectors highlight shared visions for development under APC leadership, PDP spokespersons expressed dismay, calling it a “betrayal of voter trust.”

The assembly’s leadership has yet to comment formally, but sources indicate the newcomers will be welcomed with open arms.
