Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has announced intensified preparations for the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow march scheduled for October 20 to Aso Rock Villa, while actively engaging Nigerian political leaders to seek justice and dialogue.

In a statement on X, Sowore revealed, “I have continued to engage key Nigerian official leaders in pursuit of justice and dialogue.”

He noted that he reached out to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abbas, and his Deputy, Benjamin Kalu, seeking a plenary session to pass a resolution demanding the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

However, the Speaker declined to table the matter officially citing the ongoing court trial but assured private discussions with key representatives, including Obi Aguocha from Kanu’s constituency, to explore political solutions.

Notably, Abbas mentioned he had “previously made underground interventions with the DSS on the matter.”

The activist said Deputy Speaker Kalu acknowledged ongoing talks with President Tinubu concerning Kanu’s release but described the judicial process as “frustratingly slow,” implying many officials might be using the trial as an excuse to delay action.

Sowore also claimed he sought support from Abia State House of Assembly members for the protest but said they have not yet responded despite their earlier public support.

He underscored the unwavering commitment to the October 20 protest noting, “We march powerfully, resolutely, and lawfully to demand justice and freedom for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

Highlighting the political context, Sowore noted that President Tinubu is expected to travel to Rome around the protest date, raising speculation about possible avoidance of the demonstration.

Nonetheless, Sowore remains optimistic that the president “will be back in the country by then to witness the will of the people in full measure.”
