Nottingham Forest forward, Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following a serious abdominal injury sustained during their Premier League match against Leicester City on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Nigerian collided heavily with the goalpost while attempting to connect with a cross, suffering the injury that required immediate medical intervention.

Despite receiving on-field treatment and continuing briefly, Awoniyi was visibly limping and unable to be substituted due to the team’s exhausted substitution options.

The club confirmed the surgery took place on Monday night, with best wishes extended to the player for a swift recovery.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis expressed frustration over the handling of the injury, highlighting a misjudgment by the medical team and a communication breakdown with the coaching staff.

Awoniyi’s absence will impact Forest as they pursue a top-five finish in the Premier League.
