President Bola Tinubu has officially accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the expiration of his second term.

Yakubu, who was first appointed in November 2015, served two five-year terms overseeing Nigeria’s electoral processes.

President Tinubu in a statement issued by his spokesman Bayo Onanuga, expressed gratitude for Yakubu’s contribution to the nation, noting his role in “sustaining Nigeria’s democracy, particularly through the organisation of free and fair elections throughout his two-term tenure.”

To honour his service, Tinubu bestowed the national award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on Professor Yakubu.

The President also directed that Yakubu hand over leadership to the most senior national commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will manage the commission until a new chairman is appointed.

In his response dated October 3, 2025, Professor Yakubu thanked the President for the opportunity to lead the commission since 2015.
