President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sympathy to traders and residents of Kano State following a massive fire that gutted Singer Market over the weekend, marking the second such disaster at the site in under two weeks.
The blaze erupted on Saturday evening and burned fiercely into Sunday morning, ravaging the bustling food market and leaving traders in despair.
In a statement issued Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu described the incident as “tragic.”
The President had promptly contacted Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for a situation report.
He voiced particular alarm over the timing, “The President was particularly alarmed that the latest incident came less than two weeks after another fire destroyed dozens of shops and property at the same market.”
Tinubu has directed authorities to launch “a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the market fires, which often leave traders in despair.”
The statement opened with a clear call to action, “Kano market fire: President Tinubu sympathisers with traders; orders comprehensive investigation.”
Traders are now assessing losses, with calls growing for better fire safety measures in Nigeria’s crowded markets.
