President Bola Tinubu has announced the death of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London at approximately 4:30 pm on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

In a statement that was issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu expressed his condolences to the Buhari family, revealing that he had spoken with Aishat Buhari, the late President’s widow, and offered his “deep condolences.”

“President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences,” the statement reads.

However, as part of the nation’s mourning, Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.

“President Tinubu has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria,” Onanuga stated.

The President further ordered that flags be flown at half-staff nationwide in honour of the late leader.

Muhammadu Buhari was twice elected as Nigeria’s President, serving from 2015 and again in 2023. He previously led the country as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
