President Bola Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), days after the Senate confirmed its members on December 16.

The move signals renewed momentum for transforming Nigeria’s electricity sector amid ongoing challenges like unreliable supply and high tariffs.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the decision in a statement today.

“President Tinubu Reconstitutes the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission,” Onanuga stated, highlighting the immediate effect of key leadership changes.

Leading the new board is Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni, PhD, appointed Chairman effective December 1, 2025.

A veteran commissioner since January 2017 and former Vice Chairman, Dr Oseni will serve until the end of his ten-year tenure under the Electricity Act, 2023. Yusuf Ali, PhD, steps in as Vice Chairman, also effective December 1, continuing from his commissioner role since February 2022.

The full board lineup includes:
• Nathan Rogers Shatti – Commissioner (second term, since January 2017)
• Dafe Akpeneye – Commissioner (second term, since January 2017)
• Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello – Commissioner (second term, since December 2020)
• Dr. Chidi Ike – Commissioner (first term, since February 2022)
• Dr. Fouad Animashaun – Commissioner (first term, effective December 2025)

Dr Animashaun brings deep expertise as an energy economist and former Executive Commissioner/CEO of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Tinubu thereby charged the board to “deepen and consolidate the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s power sector, in strict alignment with the letter and spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023.”
