Troops of the 3 Division/Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) have thwarted a planned bandit assault in Plateau State, neutralising one notorious criminal and recovering weapons amid heightened yuletide security efforts.

The operation unfolded in the early hours of December 25, 2025, at Gwande Community in Monguna District, Bokkos Local Government Area. Acting on credible intelligence, the troops ambushed a group of armed bandits mobilising for an attack on a nearby community.

A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, with the soldiers forcing the criminals to flee in disarray.

Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, Media Information Officer for JTF Operation ENDURING PEACE, detailed the outcome in an official statement, “In the subsequent exchange of gunfire, one bandit was neutralised, while others escaped with possible gunshot wounds. Items recovered from the criminals include one fabricated revolver rifle, one fabricated pistol, 9 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, and 6 cartridges.”

Community feedback identified the neutralised bandit as a key member of a syndicate terrorizing Gwande and surrounding areas.

Troops have since launched intensified follow-up operations to hunt down the fleeing suspects.
This action forms part of the decisive phase of Operation PEACE SHIELD, aimed at ensuring a secure holiday period.

Major Zhakom reaffirmed the task force’s resolve, stating, “The 3 Division/JTF OPEP reassure law-abiding residents of Plateau State of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property” and warned criminals, “Troops remain resolute, vigilant, and prepared to deal ruthlessly with any threat to peace and security.”

He thereby enjoined the public to provide timely intelligence to support ongoing efforts.
