Troops from the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army thwarted a brazen boat hijacking, rescuing 18 passengers—including two infants—unharmed after suspected sea pirates struck on a vessel traveling from Nigeria to Cameroon.

The dramatic incident unfolded on January 11, 2026, when pirates in two speedboats and a wooden boat seized the passenger boat near Kombo Fishing Port in Cameroonian waterways, according to a statement from Major Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at 13 Brigade Headquarters.

Acting on a distress call, troops stationed at Ikang launched a swift pursuit.

An intense exchange of fire forced one pirate speedboat to capsize, scattering the criminals into surrounding creeks as they fled, abandoning their captives.

“All passengers were rescued unharmed,” the statement confirmed, highlighting the operation’s success.

Brigadier General PO Alimikhena, Commander of 13 Brigade, praised his team’s valor, stating, “This successful rescue operation demonstrates the courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment of our men and women to protect lives and ensure the safety of our waterways. We will continue to dominate our operational environment and safeguard our citizens against all criminal elements.”

Alimikhena urged members of the public to provide meaningful information that can assist the troops in effectively combating criminal activities across Cross River State, emphasizing that community cooperation is essential for maintaining security.
