Troops from Operation UDO KA under the Joint Task Force Southeast (JTF SE) pulled off a dramatic rescue on Friday night, saving five travelers from armed kidnappers along the 9th Mile axis in the 82 Division Area of Responsibility.

The operation kicked off after a distress call at 6:55pm on February 20, 2026, reporting a suspected IPOB/ESN attack on commuters heading to Anambra State.

“The troops immediately mobilised to the scene and decisively engaged the armed elements with superior firepower and tactical manoeuvre,” the army stated.

Their “swift and well-coordinated response compelled the criminals to abandon their captives and fled.”

All five victims were freed unharmed, and their vehicle was recovered intact.

Post-rescue, troops ramped up patrols to hunt down fleeing suspects and prevent any comeback.

This success highlights the army’s ongoing push against insecurity in the region.

“Troops intensified aggressive patrols and sustained area domination efforts to forestall any regrouping, track fleeing suspects and deny criminal elements freedom of action,” the statement noted.

It added that the proactive efforts have “reinforced public confidence, reassured commuters and further degraded the operational capabilities of hostile actors.”

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its dedication: “The Nigerian Army remains resolute and unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding lives, securing critical lines of communication and dismantling all terrorist and criminal networks in the Southeast.”

Officials urged the public to keep sharing tips, stressing that “collective vigilance and cooperation remain vital to achieving enduring peace, stability and security.”
