U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that he will attend the FIFA Club World Cup final this Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The announcement came during a Cabinet meeting at the White House, where Trump stated plainly, “I’ll be going to the game.”
This final will feature Chelsea facing the winner of the semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
The event is seen as a significant precursor to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States will co-host with Canada and Mexico.
MetLife Stadium is also slated to host the 2026 World Cup final, underscoring the importance of the Club World Cup as a dry run for next year’s global tournament.
Coinciding with Trump’s announcement, FIFA revealed it has opened a new office at Trump Tower in New York City, aiming to strengthen its relationship with the U.S. government ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the cooperation, saying, “We have received tremendous support from the government and from the President with the White House Task Force for the FIFA Club World Cup and for the FIFA World Cup next year.” Infantino also emphasised the global nature of FIFA, stating, “To be global, you must be local, have to be everywhere, we need to be in New York.”
