The United States government announced a new visa policy aimed at combating religious persecution globally, including in Nigeria.
Secretary to the White House, Marco Rubio, in a terse statement on X emphasised the firm stance taken by the U.S. on this issue.
“The United States is taking decisive action in response to the atrocities and violence against Christians in Nigeria and around the world. The @StateDept will restrict U.S. visas for those who knowingly direct, authorize, fund, support, or carry out violations of religious freedom,” he wrote on Wednesday.
Rubio further explained that this policy “applies to Nigeria and other governments or individuals that persecute people for their religious beliefs,” signaling a broad and tough approach to protecting religious rights internationally.
