UN Women, Ministry of Women Affairs hold 3rd NAP Review and Validation Workshop
UN Women, in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, with support from the Government of Norway, hosted a significant validation workshop aimed at finalizing the 3rd generation National Action Plan (2024-2029) for the implementation of UNSCR 1325.
This event is set to ensure that the policy document is not only accurate but also widely accepted and owned by diverse actors across various sectors in Nigeria.
The workshop targeted strategic partners, including government ministries, departments, agencies, legislators, development partners, civil society organizations, and Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) experts.
Their collective input is crucial in ensuring the coherence and quality of the 3rd NAP, which is designed to address women’s needs and integrate their perspectives in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and security processes.
In her goodwill message, UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Madam Beatrice Eyong said, “We need to remind ourselves that there are emerging threats to women’s peace and security, including insurgency and endemic poverty that need to be addressed.”
She highlighted the importance of creating an environment where women can actively contribute and have their voices heard in developing and implementing solutions to promote peace at all levels.
Madam Eyong also highlighted the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, including government ministries, security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, and media, in adopting innovative strategies and ensuring compliance with regional and sectoral commitments on WPS.
The Federal Minister of Women Affairs, H.E. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, reiterated the vital role of women’s empowerment in all national programs, noting that the lack of empowerment directly impacts the well-being of children and the broader Nigerian society.
Madam Beatrice Eyong emphasized the efforts of UN Women in various areas, including women’s empowerment and in advocating for the inclusion of gender considerations in national budgets through collaboration with various stakeholders.
She provided a comprehensive overview of UN Women’s interventions, which focus on coordination, women’s peace and security, humanitarian action, women’s economic empowerment, women’s inclusion in governance, and ending violence against women and girls in Nigeria.
