Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, has shed light on his unusual goal celebration during Bayer Leverkusen’s 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
After scoring his first goal in the 30th minute, Boniface headed to the stands and proceeded to remove his shorts, surprising everyone in attendance.
The 23-year-old later found the back of the net again in the 70th minute, but his celebration drew significant attention.
In a post-match interview, Boniface clarified that his actions were not meant to provoke anyone.
He said, “I didn’t want to provoke anyone, I just wanted to celebrate in my own way.”
The Super Eagles forward revealed that his celebration was inspired by a TikTok trend started by a popular Nigerian influencer.
“It’s a TikTok trend from a big influencer in Nigeria. I promised him I would celebrate like that, I just hadn’t scored yet,” Boniface added.
Boniface’s brace helped Leverkusen secure a convincing victory over Hoffenheim, with the final score ending 4-1 in favour of Xabi Alonso’s side. The win comes as a relief for Leverkusen, who suffered a defeat against RB Leipzig in the previous round.
Despite the controversy surrounding his celebration, Boniface’s performance on the pitch was undoubtedly impressive, as he continues to make a name for himself in the Bundesliga.
