The 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) paused its celebrations on Monday to honour fallen icons of African music, including late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba Ali’s Mohbad, Modupe Temitope Dada – wife of AFRIMA President Mike Dada – and other contributors to the continent’s vibrant soundscape.

A heartfelt tribute segment, captured in a widely shared video from the dimly lit venue, featured a slideshow montage on a massive onstage screen.

Portraits of the honorees appeared in elegant circular frames adorned with candle icons, evoking solemn remembrance amid subtle animations and the AFRIMA logo.

The audience, many sporting event lanyards, watched attentively as the sequence highlighted performers in emotional moments – singing passionately, gesturing on stage, or dressed in formal attire.

The event underscored AFRIMA’s tradition of immortalising those who’ve shaped African music beyond their lifetimes.

Mohbad, who tragically passed in 2023 at age 27, received special recognition alongside Dada and other industry figures.

“This segment reminds us that the rhythm of African music beats on through those we’ve lost,” a viewer commented on social media, capturing the night’s reflective mood.
