Onakoya, alongside United States chess player Shawn Martinez, surpassed the previous record set in 2024 by Norwegian duo Odin Blikra Vea and Askild Bryn by clocking in at 61 hours, 3 minutes, and 34 seconds.
The marathon took place from April 17 to April 20, 2025, and served as both a personal achievement for Onakoya and a platform to raise awareness and support for children’s education in Africa.
This was Onakoya’s second attempt at the record, having briefly held it in April 2024 before being overtaken by the Norwegians.
With this latest feat, Onakoya has once again set a new benchmark in the world of chess marathons.
Through his initiative, Chess in Slums Africa, he aims to impact the lives of at least one million children in underserved communities across the continent.
