A viral 47-second video from the Warri Palace has sparked online buzz after an aide to the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, politely intervened to uphold royal protocol when a woman attempted to shake the monarch’s hand.
The footage the Olu moving through a palace lounge accompanied by his entourage in striking red and white Itsekiri regalia.
As the woman extended her hand in greeting, the aide swiftly stepped in, gently blocking the gesture while maintaining a cordial demeanor.
This action aligns with longstanding palace customs, where subjects are prohibited from initiating physical contact with the Olu.
Tradition dictates that any handshake or touch must originate from the monarch himself.
The exchange stayed light-hearted, with both the Olu and the woman exchanging smiles as protocol took precedence.
Ogiame Atuwatse III, the 21st Olu of Warri since his 2021 ascension, continues to balance ancient Itsekiri traditions with modern diplomacy, including global outreach and cultural representation.
