In a dramatic and politically charged statement during his recent visit to the Ooni of Ife, Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho made headlines by declaring that the Alaafin of Oyo “has no crown,” asserting that the very crown associated with the Alaafin was originally his father’s, which was allegedly taken and used unlawfully.

Speaking passionately before traditional council members and supporters, Igboho said, “Alaafin has no crown, it was my father’s crown they collected and dashed Alaafin. This is not just about tradition, it is about restoring truth to our people.”
The statement was made amid ongoing discussions about Yoruba heritage, leadership, and cultural identity.
Sunday Igboho, known for his strong stance on Yoruba self-determination and justice, used the occasion of his visit to the revered Ooni of Ife palace to highlight what he described as historical irregularities in the custodianship of Yoruba royal symbols.
The Ooni of Ife, regarded as one of the most respected traditional rulers among the Yoruba, received Igboho warmly, though no official statement was issued by the throne regarding the contentious claims.
