Speaking on the decision, Governor Diri declared, “My membership of the People’s Democratic Party, and I’m not going to resign alone. And as you can see, I’m here with Mr Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and all the members of our party are going with. There are some who are not here because they are on assignment.”

He expressed gratitude to his supporters, saying, “I am grateful to all my friends and supporters who have stood by us and with us. I want to thank all of you again and together, we’ll continue to build a strong, virile Bayelsa state and a strong and virile country by extension. Once again, I appreciate you and thank you all, and may God bless Bayelsa state.”

While Governor Diri did not disclose which party they are joining, the political realignment in Bayelsa parallels former Bayelsa East Senator Ben Murray-Bruce’s recent defection from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bruce praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership on social media, stating Nigeria now has “a President who truly understands finance, who sees the economy not as a political slogan, but as a living organism that must be disciplined, deregulated, and allowed to breathe.”
